I'm led to believe that the beginning is a very good place to start (big Sound of Music fan) so here goes, my very first post on The Ordinary Lovely. Forever impacted by my school days, September, rather than January, has always seemed like the start of a new year to me ... a time to reflect, review and then race ahead with wonderfully exciting new ideas ... hence the reason for choosing the first of this month to begin my next online adventure. I stopped short of buying myself a pencil case and back pack though, don't worry.
Why The Ordinary Lovely and what can you expect to find here?
Well ... I'm busy ... really busy ... pretty much all of the time. I mean, who isn't these days? And when you're busy, it's tempting to look ahead to THE NEXT BIG THING. A fancy night out, a weekend away, a summer holiday, Christmas even. It's so easy to write off ordinary days as they can seem relatively unexciting when compared to jetting off somewhere sunny or sitting down to a festive feast. However, it's even easier to find little bits of loveliness in each and every day ... small things that we simply have to take the time to really appreciate.
It could be savouring the perfect cup of coffee, silently cheering at finding a great hiding place in a particularly competitive game of hide and seek, thanking the gods when, at the getting-on-a-bit age of 38, you finally find the perfect shade of lipstick for your skin tone (Yves Rocher Marron Glacé, if you're interested), or marvelling at the most beautiful of sunsets ... things that are right in front of us, or so ordinary that we often take them for granted. But we shouldn't.
The Ordinary Lovely is my promise to myself to cherish the fifty weeks of the year that we're not on holiday and the 364 days of the year that aren't Christmas Day.
I have a few regular features planned ...
... a photo project called The Ordinary Lovely (I'm hoping it will be a nudge to help improve my photography - I'm an enthusiastic beginner),
... I'm going to try my hand at stop-motion videos, mainly because I'm intrigued by them and I think it would be a fun way to record some of our days out and about (or at home),
... I'm a bit obsessed with peg boards and probably spend far more time than is healthy arranging what I display on the two that hang in my house. So, with the help of my not quite four year old, we're going to bring you seasonal peg board displays and maybe a few simple crafts that you could try with your children too (I'm not crafty so this will most likely end in disaster).
... and then I'm going to head in to the kitchen (again, not an area of expertise for me so expect more disaster) and try my hand at perfecting the very best meal ever invented ... afternoon tea. This won't be variations on the humble scone. Oh no. I'm planning to search the globe for the perfect pm pick me up.
And added to these, lots and lots of ordinary, everyday loveliness (craft and kitchen disasters aside) once or twice a week ... probably a bit on fashion, definitely lots on shoes, most likely a few posts on interiors but never any on football. I want my little space of the internet to be charming, fun and a pleasure to while away a few moments on. A celebration of the small things.
