Well, hasn't the weather taken a turn for the colder over the past few days? Gone are the bright blue skies of early autumn, and in their place a greyer, murkier and infinitely chillier version. Pumps and raincoats have been replaced by boots and winter coats ... and hats, scarves and gloves. And lip balm. Tis the season of chapped lips, too. Despite the dropping temperatures, it's still one of my favourite times of the year. It's been described as the 'unhealthy season' because people often turn inwards and indoors. I actually like a little bit of introspection and I can't believe that spending time at home snuggling under a blanket surrounded by the warm glow of candlelight is a bad thing. It's restful, it's peaceful and it's really quite heartwarming. But maybe vitamin D supplements are the way to go for a few months.
Last week, I took over the HomeSense Instagram account to share a few of my favourite home buys for staying warm and cosy during the autumn/winter months. Much like my summer clothes have been folded away in the back of my cupboard in favour of jumpers and thick socks, I've packed away some of my more delicate vases, jars and ornaments and replaced them with heartier and warmer items.
I adore candles. Particularly scented candles. One day, I'd love to live in a home with a roaring fire but until then this gorgeous tray of mismatched candles comes a very close and happy second. The tray was just £12.99 and I walked around my local HomeSense store adding and taking away candles until I had the perfect balance of depth, height, colour and scents. It's an absolute joy to light them all and watch the flames flicker. The rose gold one smells of candied peaches and it's absolutely swoon worthy. Normally, at this time of year, I'd be all about cinnamon and pine but this peaches one wins hands down.
I don't know what it is about having a tray as opposed to dotting the candles around the room. Lighting them feels more like a ritual. It's the signal that the boys are (sometimes) happily tucked up in bed and it's time to unwind after yet another hectic day ... to put our feet up and try not to fall asleep, which is easier said than done.
My other favourite buys were some fluffy towels and divine smelling bubble bath (more nights spent indoors means more time for reading books in the bath), the softest blankets perfect for adding an extra layer to our bed now the nights are colder, and the most glorious hammered copper tankards. Seriously, you haven't had hot chocolate until you've drank it topped with cream and marshmallows out of a copper tankard. I've never had so many offers of help when taking photographs.
