Because they don't sleep

The Ordinary Lovely: Because they don't sleep

Because they don't sleep. This sentence could be prefixed in many different ways. My boys. The sleep-averse tag team. One who can't sleep unless cuddled up next to his mama and the other wide-eyed and ready to start the day at barely a minute past 5.30. And neither feel inclined to nap in the day either. So. I don't really get a great deal of sleep because they don't sleep. I drink too much coffee because they don't sleep. I seem to have permanent bags under my eyes that no amount of Touche Eclat can disguise, because they don't sleep. The days (and nights) can sometimes seem a little long because they don't sleep. And so on, and so on.

But. There is a flip side. And it's one that keeps my feet walking even when I desperately want to crawl in to bed and shut my eyes. We spend more time outdoors because they don't sleep. We visit more places because they don't sleep. We spend more time together because they don't sleep. I get picked more flowers and am on the receiving end of more hugs because they don't sleep. I eat more cake because they don't sleep. Although, I'm not sure whether that's a good or bad thing? My tastebuds say good but my waistline would disagree.

However, I won't lie. It's not always easy. We can be short-tempered with each other and tears can come quicker than if we were fully rested. But with my eldest starting school full time in September, I'm nervously aware that these lazy, sleepy days spent exploring the countryside will soon be a thing of the past. And I'm pretty sure that in years to come, when I look back, I'll be wishing we had more time rather than more sleep (maybe a teeny weeny bit more sleep).

Last week, we completed the nature trail at the Hawarden Estate (such a lovely place to visit if you're ever in the North Wales/Chester area) and it was just adorable to see my two tackle it together. They're not always the best of friends but occasionally they'll run off happily together leaving me to follow behind and take a few snaps with my camera. A digital reminder of the time we spend together because they don't sleep. And yes, there was cake. Millionaire's shortbread. And a pot of tea. My jeans no longer do up.
