Despite my husband flying off to Zurich almost immediately after blowing out the candles on his birthday cake (metaphorically, not literally … nobody gets to ruin good, clean cake by blowing all over it on my watch … germ alert!), Tuesday saw him turn an almost middle-aged 39 and was the start of close to two months of celebrations for us. Birthdays, a wedding, family visiting from abroad, the school holidays (a celebration? … ask me again at the end of August). The summer equivalent of the festive season is upon us! Actually, is there a summer equivalent of the festive season? Does 'festive' cover the warmer months too if lots of feasting is involved? Or instead of saying ‘I’m feeling festive’, come July, should we start saying, ‘I’m feeling like a cocktail’? Does that work for you? Does it? It's not a bad thing to be feeling like, is it? Personally, I think it’s perfect!
Yay! It's July! I'm feeling like a cocktail!
Luckily enough, this month's styling challenge from Rose & Grey (you might remember that the last one was these gorgeous wild flower jam jars - I still use them all the time as my Instagram account will attest to) was to do something fabulous with one of their cocktail gift sets. I chose a margarita one, with margaritas reminding me of a few wild nights in Vegas (tales of which I will never share online, no matter how many sour sweets you bribe me with). Each set comes with two glasses, two straws, two umbrellas, two coasters and two über cool flamingos.
I was tempted to go all sophisticated on you. Get the cocktail shaker out and make something elegant and yet cool. Keep the styling simple. Maybe with a slightly urban touch. But the flamingos!! Look at the flamingos!! If they don't scream party, I don't know what does. So here's my birthday party styling, with just a touch of the mess of the morning after the night before. And, as is becoming the norm on The Ordinary Lovely, I had an assistant stylist on the shoot who was very useful in determining whether the party poppers had the right amount of POP!
Fear not, these 'margaritas' were in fact cloudy lemonade. That's what four year olds are currently charging for setting up photo shoots. With the addition of a chocolate bar, if it runs in to overtime.
