Sweet simplicity

The Ordinary Lovely: Sunset in Capri

With the summer holidays soon to start, I'm trying desperately hard not to fall in to the trap of overscheduling too many things for the boys in a panicked attempt to fill their days so they don't experience a moment's boredom. Truth be told, they both need a rest from the daily routine of being rushed out of the house in the morning, rushed home again, rushed to sports clubs, and then rushed to bed. I actually think a little bit of boredom might be a good thing for both of them ... and for me.

Speaking with my five year about what makes him happy and what he'd like to do during his time off, he loved the pace of the days when we were recently on holiday (I'll share a little bit more about our week in Capri in another post). He enjoyed the lazy, Nutella-filled breakfasts, running around the island with his brother, pizza lunches, ice cream breaks, swimming in the pool, and then staying up late to have dinner with our extended family and sitting in the famous square to watch the sun set. The simple things, really. And things we can absolutely fill his summer holidays with ... except the sunny weather, it seems!!

Now I'm not naive enough to think we can do all those things for a full six weeks without them wearing a bit thin, but it has made me realise that the boys don't necessarily need big days out and a huge amount of money spent on them.

We have a trip to Hobbycraft planned for next Friday to stock up on craft supplies, a new nature scrapbook to work through, and the determination to rid bikes of stabilisers. They want to spend time with their grandparents, walk their aunt and uncle's dog, and have a sleepover in the garden. Requests have been made for more home baking (flapjacks are a big winner in this house), pizza picnics in the garden, and a trip to the beach (come rain or come shine). Throw in daily ice cream breaks, and I think we've got these holidays covered.

I can't wait!
