I have a problem, don't I? It's probably time for me to start a new blog dedicated entirely to storage, isn't it? I talk about it a lot, I know. Its become an addiction. I just can't help it. I've said this a million times I'm sure, but good storage can make such a massive difference to the look and feel of your home. Seriously, when everything can be easily and neatly put away, be that toys, clothes, trinkets, books, etc, it leaves your home so much nicer, brighter and clutter-free. And I think it has a similar impact on your brain and well-being, too. I definitely feel a lot more relaxed when everything around me is all neat, tidy and organised (well, as much as it can be when you live with small toy-loving children).
Today, I want to introduce you to Great Little Trading Co.'s latest storage gem that's helping to keep my house in order ... the Poppins Toy Chest. New for Spring/Summer 17, it's a fab addition to an already brilliant storage range. While it's labelled a toy chest, it's so much more than that.
Let's take a closer look.
The Poppins Toy Chest is not just designed to decorate; with its simple, streamlined shape, yes, it does look really good, but its size makes it so incredibly practical, too.
It measures 47cm high by 90cm wide and 40.5cm deep. That's a lot of space for a lot of toys. A whole lot of toys!
It's made from solid MDF with a painted finish and, as with all GLTC's products, feels incredibly substantial and well made. There are also a few thoughtful, special details which set it apart and I'll tell you more about those in a minute.
It retails at £165, with a choice of three matching cushions available to purchase separately for an additional £32 (there's a choice of grey star, navy star, or confetti spot).
The toy chest comes with easy to follow assembly instructions and requires a second person for some of the fiddly bits like screwing the lid on, but on the whole can be constructed by one person and in less than an hour.
And let me share with you what I personally think are the three standout features of the toy chest.
1. Great Design
I never advocate style over substance. The perfect product will offer both. You might have to pay a little but more for it but you will most definitely get value from it in the long term. The Poppins Toy Chest is one of those products. It's designed to slot in to family life, in any room, and is not solely aimed at very young children - I love colourful and bright designs but often feel that their shelf life is limited and that children inevitably grow out of them within a couple of years.
This is a chest that can begin its life storing toys, move on to keeping shoes and boots out of sight, and then perhaps end up being a blanket box or a place to sit in a hallway. You could even use it as an impromptu extra chair (or two) at the dining table if you have visitors.
With regards to the cushions, the predominantly white confetti spot design fits with any room but the grey and navy might be better at camouflaging marks from sticky fingers. That said, the cotton cover is washable so you can always pop it in the machine if it starts to look well used.
I mentioned thoughtful details earlier and these are the reasons which have me buying from GLTC over and above my role on the testing team. Having had numerous trips to A&E as a child with broken and fractured fingers, I am probably over conscious of my boys not hurting their's. The Poppins Toy Chest features a safety hinge so there's no fear of the lid slamming down unexpectedly, and there's a cut out so that children can lift it up and down without their fingers getting trapped. There are also two further cut out handles on each side so that the chest can be picked up and moved around really easily.
As with all Great Little Trading Co. products, the Poppins Toy Chest is built to last rather than built to 'do for now'. It's durable and hardwearing enough to be used in a prominent place in the home. It's a solid piece furniture.
3. Versatile & Flexible
The Poppins Toy Chest is so versatile in that the design is simple and sleek enough that you could use it in any room of the house, but it's also an incredibly flexible piece of furniture, too. The top can be used as a seat or playing space. Pop the matching cushion on and it's comfortable enough for children to sit or lie on and read a book. Take the cushion off and it's a steady surface to race cars or place a doll's house or castle. The main compartment offers a huge amount of storage ... that section is vast! And the extra drawer at the bottom is fantastic for all the small toys which seem to get lost at the bottom of other toy chests. It really is the perfect toy chest and one that has already seen a lot of use in my home.
