A few weeks ago, I swapped bedtime stories with my two boys for sipping cocktails and admiring sequins at the Sanderson Hotel in London. And it was wonderful. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against The Gruffalo but dinner with Julien Macdonald combined with a preview of his new Star by Julien Macdonald AW17 interior collection for Debenhams was a really exciting and fun change. Even more so as the lovely Jess accompanied me.
Pre-dinner, we popped up to the penthouse for drinks and to chat to the man himself. With every room decorated with pieces from the current Star collection and a few sneak peeks of the new AW17 range, we stepped in to Julien's world for a while. The entire space was even lit with his exquisitely scented Black Vanilla candles, and several of his breathtaking dresses were dotted around the room (both J Lo and Kim K are a lot more petite than they are portrayed in the press ... curvy but tiny).
We were then whisked downstairs to the Billiard Room for dinner where we were greeted by the most beautifully decorated table. The flowers! Oh my, the flowers! I'd like to attempt to recreate something similar on my own dining table but fear my efforts would be wasted on my four and six year. I might give it a try, though.
Have a scroll through the images from the evening ... the table setting is at the end.
Julien is known for his stunning catwalk creations which ooze glamour and create maximum impact. And this is a look and feel which is very much in evidence in his Star by Julien Macdonald interior collection for Debenhams. Think intricate beading, lace detailing, sparkles and sequins. Opulent cushions and luxurious throws feature but at a very realistic Debenhams price point.
While I love looking at room setups and seeing how the professionals style things, it always leaves me wondering how individual pieces or a collection of accessories would look in my own home. With a personal home style that's more practical than luxurious and with a slight fear of embellishment, I was curious as to which items from the Star collection would work for me and if Julien could convince me to take a step towards the sequin side.
Here's how I got on.
When it comes to fabrics and throws in the bedroom, cotton and linen always win out for me. But I have to admit, I completely fell for this gorgeous pale pink cushion with beautiful bow detail. My love for all things blush is still going strong. However, it's so vastly different from anything that I own that I'd be hard pressed to find a permanent home for it. It looks fantastic next to the metallic beaded cushion and if an opulent bedroom to retreat is for you, snap them up.
On the flip side, I didn't expect faux fur to be for me, but oh my goodness, don't you dare try to take that white throw from my hands. I love it. Absolutely love it. It looks amazing, feels amazing, and will work in most rooms and homes. My taste tends towards the colourful and reasonably minimal but this throw adds much needed texture to my bed and also to my sofa. My children love it, too. It's so tactile and my favourite piece from the entire range. It's currently on sale at £100 but the quality makes it more than worth its original £125 price tag.
The living room
And in the living room? There's that throw again! It's just so nice, isn't it? The cushions are stunning and the level of embellishment is phenomenal. But once again, probably not quite right for my more simple but colourful living room. Look at the beading, though. It's incredible! If you have a pale or grey sofa and like a living room with a more luxurious feel, these colours and styles would work an absolute treat.
From having a play around with various cushions and throws, one thing I particularly love about the range is how you can mix and match everything. It really is a well thought out collection with all of the pieces having something in common.
I mentioned that we were given a sneak peek at the AW17 interior collection and here are a few iPhone shots of what you can expect. It's glamour and luxury personified. Shimmering metallics, feather engravings, and most excitingly, velvet! I love velvet. It's a huge trend for 2017 and I can't wait to get my hands on the gorgeous cushions that you can spot on the bed below. They're divine!
What do you think? Do you have room for more sequins in your home? I know you'll have a place for one of Julien's beautiful throws, trust me.
