I know what the title of this post says. And I'm pretty sure that I know what you're thinking. While it lasts? Has the summer actually started yet? I'm really not too sure, to be honest. And I've just checked the forecast for the next ten days and what can I say? It's not looking good. Eight days of rain and two of potential sunshine. If we're lucky. But let's place our trust in the meteorologists of this world and seize those two days ... and nights ... to invite friends or family round to celebrate this extremely short-lived and perhaps somewhat disappointing season.
Anyway, forever hopeful that the sun will shine and we'll have gorgeously warm evenings to bask in its rays, here are my top tips for celebrating the summer with friends. In the most laid back of fashions, of course. Summer is for simple entertaining. Kicking off sandals and dining with the smell of suncream in the air. We don't want to be too formal and fussy, do we?
A simple supper
If your idea of heaven is spending hours in a kitchen preparing a sumptuous feast for your guests, then go for it. I'm much happier putting things on plates and using that time to chat and enjoy a glass of super chilled wine. Simple suppers are ideal in summer. Adorn a table with meats, cheeses, breads, dips and savoury treats. Every one can help themselves to a little bit of everything and time spent fussing over a hot stove is kept to a minimum.
The perfect playlist
How often do we hear a tune on the radio and are whisked straight back to the summer when we first heard it? I Love You Baby by The Original. Tenerife 1995. Sweet Like Chocolate by Shanks & Bigfoot. Ibiza 1999. We're on the Ball by Ant and Dec. Capri 2004. Don't ask. Summer tunes are the best. You can find so many playlists on Spotify to suit the mood you want but I'm a sucker for a Ministry of Sound Chilled compilation. I love them. Volume II is by far the best, if you're looking for a recommendation.
A gorgeous guest room
If you have friends staying over and you're lucky enough to have a spare room for them to sleep in (it's one of the boy's beds or the floor in our house), why not take a couple of minutes to add a few summery touches to the room? A vase of cut flowers, a peaches or nectarine scented candle (Jo Malone's Nectarine Blossom & Honey is my personal favourite), and a jug of water by the bed ... and perhaps paracetamol if you're planning to relive the summer evenings of your youth.
The best night's sleep with Bruno
For the best night's sleep, of course you need an amazing mattress. The Bruno mattress comes highly recommended by Which? magazine and The Independent to name but two. Its German ergonomic engineering is the key to a fantastic night's sleep. The natural latex top layer is breathable and promotes airflow thus keeping the mattress lovely and cool on warmer nights. Perfect for summer celebrations! And it's hypoallergenic too with an OEKO-TEX standard 100 label, certifying it safe for babies and children. Pop over to Morgana's blog Coffee Work Sleep Repeat to read (and watch) her thoughts on the Bruno mattress. Her video is so good but those poor peonies!
A bountiful breakfast
And when you wake up from the best night's sleep, what do you want? A breakfast packed with delicious summer berries, sweet orange juice and perfectly grilled toast. Don't forget the Sunday paper. And keep your fingers crossed that the children lie in. Too much to ask for? Probably. But we can dream, right?
Enjoy your summer celebrations!
