For someone who traditionally loves autumn, it’s taken me a long time to get onboard with it this year. Surprisingly, I miss the warmth that requires me to cover my pale, freckled skin in gloopy clothes-ruining factor 50. Most unusual. But, over the past few weeks, the fire has been lit, blankets have been draped over even more surfaces, and slippers have become an essential. I’ve even started stocking up on air drying clay for Christmas crafts with the boys. I guess the heady days - and outdoor cinema nights - of August are well and truly a thing of the past.
Anyway, very timely giving me a nudge to get my autumn-faff on and add a touch more warmth and magic to my home, step forward one of the world’s largest online retailers of home furnishings … Wayfair.co.uk! With the help of a couple of handpicked items from Ivyline, Wayfair challenged me to style my shelves and embrace the gloriousness of autumn before we soon reach the damp and dreary depths of winter.
Have you come across the Christmas four gift rule for buying presents for children? Something they want, something they need, something to wear, something to read. I love the sentiment. And I think it can be applied to the perfect #shelfie too. It encourages a mix of form and function - things you love and things you need. And what could be better that that on shelf or two?
Something You Want
It was love. Yes, love. At first sight, too. Really! I spied it on the busy website in and amongst many other beautiful things, but it spoke to me in a way the others didn't.
’Look at me. You know you want me. You know your fern would look good in me. And I’m shiny. Oh so, shiny. Some might say that I glisten. PICK ME!’
So I did. And that stunning planter has now taken pride of place on my shelves. Every day since, I’ve walked past and marvelled at that shiny glistening bowl of joy, so there in lies my top tip for the perfect shelfie. Start with something you really want and really love and make it the star. Everything else will fall in to place around it.
Something You Need
I know, I know, you’ve spotted the gin on the top shelf and have raised a bemused eyebrow thinking that you’re going to see it under the ‘something I need’ section. How dare you! Okay, it was a fair guess, I’ll admit it. But you’re wrong.
More so than gin, what does every shelf need at this time of year to counter the early darkness? Twinkly lights! And in abundance! I picked up loads of copper wire lights in the January sales and have recently started throwing them around every room. My poor husband daren’t stand still in case he finds them woven through his arms and hair.
Something To Wear
Something to wear? On a shelf? Absolutely! But I do mean in the form of a blanket rather than an item of clothing. It could be tucked in a basket with a corner casually draped over the edge, or? In my case? A drawer!
Like twinkly lights, I love having blankets everywhere. Instantly, they make rooms feel cosier. They almost insist that you grab them and curl up on the sofa. It would just be wrong not to, right?
Something To Read
And finally, something to read. Because when it’s autumn and you have both twinkly lights and a blanket to hand, you’re going to need a wonderful book to read in between admiring the shiny glistening things on your shelves.
My current favourites? The Art of Coorie which you can spot adding a little more height to my pot plant, and Country Living magazine which is nestled in the beautiful … Actually, do you want to guess what it’s real purpose is before I claim it’s a magazine holder? Do you know? Thoughts? It’s a log carrier! It’s gorgeous, isn’t it? I might use if for logs one day but for now, it’s staying exactly where it is.
What do you think of my autumn shelfie? And what would you include on yours?
