Smart furniture: Scandinavian inspired style with the latest technology

I read so many interiors blogs, buy countless home and garden magazines and receive press release after press release about product launches and this month’s ‘must have’ piece of furniture or accessory. I love information but it can sometimes get a bit overwhelming. Headlines scream ‘New! Bigger! Better!’ and you really have to stop and think hard about whether your life and your home really does need something like that or if your brain is simply responding to a catchy title and a pretty picture.

Admittedly, I don’t always get it right. I’ve made the odd purchase which has been delivered to my front door only to find itself taken out of the back door, put in to the boot of my car and driven to the charity shop a few weeks later. But over time I’ve learnt to ask myself three things:

  1. Do I genuinely have a place for it?

  2. Does it solve a problem?

  3. Does it make me smile when I walk in to a room?

If I can say yes to two of those three things, I can argue a case for buying the item. Yes to all three, and providing the price is fair and we can afford it, then it’s mine. If you find yourself falling in love with every new trend and have magpie tendencies for all things house-related, try it. It’s stopped me from making so many rash (Instagram responsive) purchases.

A few weeks ago, Wooden Furniture Store sent me an email about potentially collaborating with them on a blog post. They stock so many beautiful pieces of furniture that I knew it wouldn’t be hard to pick a few (or more) favourites to share with you, but then I spotted the San Francisco smart furniture range - a range with a Scandinavian look and feel and equipped with cool technology, too. I was intrigued. So instead of writing a roundup type of post, I asked if they’d mind letting me have a closer look at one of the lamp tables. I was so excited when they said yes, not only because it’s brilliant to be able to try new things and report back but also because the San Francisco round lamp table receives a resounding YES to all three of ‘to buy or not to buy’ questions so I feel super confident in recommending it to you.

Let’s take a closer look at it …

Do I genuinely have a place for it?

Absolutely, yes. In fact, I had the opposite issue … three rooms and five potential places to put it. Okay, we’ve only recently moved house so we do have many corners to fill but it’s table that would work really well in so many different spaces. I was so close to using it as a bedside table when Paul insisted that we put it in the living room. While we already have one coffee table in there, there’s an empty space crying out for something that little bit special right next to the Scandi-looking armchair that we shipped back from Switzerland with us, which conveniently sits next to a plug. Why, conveniently? Read on!

Does it solve a problem?

So, why a plug? Well, that’s for the smart technology, of course. The table has a long list of cool features: Bluetooth compatible speakers, QI wireless charging, and two USB ports. It seriously couldn’t be more perfect for us - or for any family who has their music, videos, audio books and podcasts on their phone. We get to lie on the sofa and listen to our favourite songs or the lovely Stephen Fry reading yet another Harry Potter instalment without any faffing about with chargers, cables, or speakers. So, yes, it solves a problem, too.

Does it make me smile when I walk in to a room?

Look at it! It’s gorgeous. Of course it makes me smile. No sacrificing style for tech - a bugbear of mine. I love the warmth of the wood and how the table feels substantial but it still elegant. It’s quite traditional in its looks but still works so well in a modern family home. If you don’t want the USB ports and charging point to be so obvious, you can spin the table around and have them facing the wall - I did wonder whether they’d bother me, but they actually don’t. The black cable is a niggle, but a small one. I’m going to see if I can make it look a little neater with a cable tie.

If you have a place in your home for the San Francisco smart table, it’s currently for sale at £299. A great price for a great table.
