We may have moved a mere hop, skip and jump down the road from our old abode but where we are now couldn't feel more different. We have a home and garden with a little bit more space and a whole lot more history. Yes, a new build was insanely practical when the boys were very young and I will be eternally grateful for having zero renovation or decorating work to do during the years they deemed sleep highly unnecessary, but I love the quirky features and solid walls (a metre thick in some places) that our much older house brings.
But there is a downside. A small one, but most definitely a noticeable one for a bit of a neat/clean freak like me. Unfortunately, an older house and a more rural location means dust and cobwebs. The first might be down to the abundance of deep piled carpets and fabric laden windows, both of which we're slowly but surely replacing. The second? Well, I think we're forever destined to play a daily game of 'free the spider, clear the cobweb', and as it's quite a large house, it's not a small job.
Now, I wouldn't say that clearing away the cobwebs has become a treat since taking delivery of the new cordless stick vacuum cleaner from Bosch, the Unlimited, but it has become so much easier. And just for that, I'm incredibly thankful. No more plugging, unplugging, trying to lift, not quite reaching, swearing a bit, grabbing a feather duster, trying not to let the duster touch me, swearing a bit more, cobwebs dropping on my head, swearing even more daily dance routine. We're a bit of a Bosch family - in Bosch we trust - and the Unlimited is a truly welcome addition to all of the home and garden appliances that we already own.
If you're looking for a new cordless vacuum cleaner and want to know more, here are five reasons why I'd recommend the Unlimited:
1. You can vacuum FOREVER despite it being cordless
My initial worry when considering a cordless vacuum was that I'd be mid cleaning and the battery would run out. While I always welcome a tea break, it's not particularly practical when you've got a house to clean and limited time to do it.
The clue is in the name. With the Unlimited, you get continuous runtime. It comes with interchangeable batteries that charge quicker than they are used - one battery can be charged (the Bosch quick charger completely recharges batteries in under sixty minutes) while the other is in use which means that you're never without power.
And even more handy for those of you like us who have a plethora of Bosch power tools under the stairs or in the garage, you can potentially use the same battery pack for all of them ... the Power for ALL System 18-volt battery. How nice is it not to have to store or faff with a multitude of different chargers?!
2. It's good looking ... monochrome fans rejoice!
Gone are the days where the consumer is only concerned with functionality. We like good design and we expect good design, even for home appliances that are hidden away for the most part. The Unlimited is sleek and stylish (I have the Unlimited Premium White) and wouldn't look out of place charging on your kitchen or hallway wall if you don't have a cupboard suitable to store it away in.
I'm not saying that I wouldn't buy a vacuum cleaner that didn't match my home, but it would certainly sway me if it did. Look, it's a match made in monochrome heaven!
Colour coordination aside, we have so many different types of flooring in our house ... rugs, carpet, tiles, wooden. The HighPower brush and DigitalSpin motor enable me to seamlessly transition between floor types without losing suction or having to fiddle with different modes on the handstick.
3. It's the ultimate cobweb clearer - down with feather dusters!
Probably the thing that I'm most thankful. Since receiving the Unlimited, I've been able to ditch the feather duster. Feather dusters make me shudder ... they might reach the cobweb but they end up bringing half of it down on your head. A quick switch from brush to nozzle means my daily cobweb hunts are quick, easy and considerably less messy. The Unlimited also comes with two upholstery nozzles which are making my velvet sofas gleam, too. Hooray!
4. It's easy to empty (without getting the cobwebs all over your hands)
I have a love/hate relationship with the clear compartments that let you see how much grime and dust your vacuum cleaner has collected from around your supposedly clean home. I'm kind of intrigued and repulsed by it all at the same time. But one thing's for sure, I definitely don't want any of that dust and grime touching any part of me. Yuck! While you're going to have to empty the small compartment (it's 0.4 L) after pretty much every whole-house clean, it's so easy to unclip and pop the lid off without any mess, fuss or unnecessary and unwanted dust/grime touching. Result!
5. Your children will help you clean
This is definitely a key selling point for parents. Traditional vacuum cleaners can be heavy and difficult for children to use. Or is that just a reason fabricated by my seven year old for not being able to help? Anyway, the Unlimited is quite lightweight and space age-y looking enough to intrigue my boys and have them wanting to use it. This alone makes it worth the £499.99 RRP. I just need them both to grow a bit so that they can take over the cobweb clearing duties!
If the Bosch Unlimited is on your consideration list and you have any questions that I haven't answered, do let me know in the comments and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
