Why is it that the mostly-beige contents of your fridge feel so much fancier when wrapped in brown paper, popped in a picnic basket and eaten under the shade of a tree? Or is it the chilled wine accompanying the bread and cheese that artificially make them seem so? Either way, sun, sandwiches, Saugvinon, and sitting on a pretty picnic blanket, you'll find no complaints from me.
I'm not really a fan of a traditional picnic hamper. With their bells, whistles, salt and pepper shakers, and teeny knives and forks, they're a little high maintenance for me ... somewhat fiddly and a bit faff to carry around. Give me a good rattan basket that I can pop just what I need in to and merrily swing by my side as we seek out the perfect sun-dappled spot.
My new favourite is this Garden Trading Bembridge basket. A gift from Amara and already very well used thanks to the insane weather we've been having lately. Fingers crossed it continues. I'll take tan lines over torrential rain any day. Who wouldn't?!
A couple of weeks ago, the boys occupied by a film, Paul and I snuck off to the bottom of the garden to stretch out in the last of the evening's sunshine and sip on a glass of wine. With only the faintest cries of 'Mum, can we have a snack?' and 'He's breathing too loudly' coming from the house, we could almost have been on a child-free holiday. Almost. Until the bangs on the window started requesting a referee in the ongoing battle of 'who gets to hold the remote control'.
But it was nice while it lasted.
So what to pack for the perfect picnic in the perfect picnic basket - other than the remote control, obviously?
I'm a big believer that the fancier the accessories, the simpler you can go with food. Set the atmosphere and not the kitchen alight. Crusty bread, crumbly cheese, cured ham. All washed down with a glass of something cold over a competitive game of garden dominoes. That's my heaven, right there.
I mentioned that the basket was a gift from Amara.
Well, it was because I took some photos of the only finished areas of our home to share on their Home Inspiration & Interior Design Ideas page. It's packed with lots of lovely images of homes that you might recognise from interiors blogs and Instagram. It's such a great source of ideas for trends and decor.
I have my very own page on there, too - The Ordinary Lovely.
Do have a look and let me know what you think.
And, happy picnicking!
