2018 will go down in the history books as the year that I was finally seduced by sunshine. It’s rare that I find happiness in temperatures above a moderate 20 degrees but this summer has been a complete and utter joy. Truth be told, I’m yet to accept that it’s pretty much over. Shorts and sandals remain in prime position in my wardrobe and suncream still sits by the back door ready to be popped in to my handbag if the Indian summer we’ve been promised actually materialises. Fingers crossed!
That said, I do feel like I’m being slowly romanced by autumn. You can tell that it’s on its way, can’t you? Crisp mornings, golden evenings, smoke-filled air, trees tinged with rust, children eyes-up checking for the appearance of conkers and requests for hot chocolates rather than ice lollies after school … sometimes with cream, always with marshmallows.
In the home, I’ve dug out our thicker duvets, switched to brushed cotton bedding, draped even more blankets over the arms of sofas, liberally sprinkled twinkly lights everywhere, and I’m rarely spotted without a hot cup of tea in hand (parents of newborns and toddlers … yes, you do eventually get to drink warm tea again, I assure you).
And candles. The low light during the darker months means that candles become less of a decoration and more of an evening ritual. I tend to light one just before we put the boys to bed which means that when they’re finally (finally!) asleep, we return downstairs to a lovely flickering glow and the sweet scent of whichever one I’ve chosen filling the air.
A few weeks ago, Wax Lyrical, a place I’ve been buying Christmas presents from for YEARS, kindly sent me their new home fragrance range in collaboration with another one of my favourites, Yvonne Ellen, whose beautiful ceramics also make amazing gifts.
I’ve never had a favourite candle before but each time I picked up and sniffed one of the four, it immediately became my chosen one. And combined with the accompanying reed diffusers slowly releasing their oils in to the air, I’ve been swapping and changing which one I like best on a daily basis. And yes, my house does now smell like an absolute dream.
I’m going to tell you a little bit about each of the four fragrances because, at the end, one lucky person is going to be able to win a candle and reed diffuser of their choice. Read on!
For summer lovers, vintage palm is the scent for you. I’m not an expert at describing what I can smell but the closest I can come to giving you an idea of what it’s like without simply listing the ingredients is that it’s the smell of fresh linen and beautiful flowers on a sunny day. And with a hint of my favourite … vanilla. It’s ideal for a bedside table. Your bedroom will smell subtly fragrant rather than enveloped by a more powerful scent. And the pale pink jars are beautiful. In fact, all of the Yvonne Ellen range is gorgeously packaged and features her cute and quirky designs.
Lavender is a really nostalgic scent for me. It makes me a little bit dreamy and I get lost in memories of when my boys were first born whenever I smell it. And it’s the first thing that I could sense when I popped the reeds in to the tranquil tide diffuser - as well as hints of cedarwood and sandalwood, both of which I love in men’s aftershave. It’s definitely a fragrance that reminds me of my whole family so I’ve popped it on my desk to give me a little pick me up during the day when the house it quiet and I miss my tearaways. And the beautiful rich green jars fit in so well the wood and natural greenery that they’re surrounded by, don’t you think?
If ever there was a fragrance designed to relax your shoulders while you slowly lower yourself in to a hot tub, it’s wild jasmine. If unwinding in a candlelit bath is your thing, this candle and reed diffuser should be on your wish list. There’s something exotic but comforting about it, which I think is the rich jasmine combined with the musky amber. It’s definitely a winner in my eyes, particularly when the sun goes down.
The fourth and final fragrance is exotic fig which, in my opinion, is the perfect flavour combination for brightening up dull autumn days. You know the ones … damp and dreary rather than crisp and colourful. This is the candle you want to light when curling up with a cup of tea and a good book. It features figs blended with green apple, a hint of jasmine and raspberry, and also my much loved sandalwood. It’s a little bit tropical but also very comforting. You’ll love it.
