This time last year, our garden was basically an expanse of patchy grass. As with most new build homes, the garden was non-existent when we first bought it, and as we were living in Switzerland at the time and needed to rent it out until we moved back to the UK, we had turf laid and a few simple shrubs planted. Our aim was merely to minimise any effort required to maintain it should potential tenants not be particularly green-fingered. When we finally moved in ourselves, it was an unloved space and remained so until we settled in and sorted out the interior. And yes, that took quite a while (and is still ongoing ... it's always going to be ongoing, isn't it?).
